In a notification dated 20th February 2014, the Assam Government has published the new Byelaws for Guwahati Building Construction 2014, applicable when applying for Building Permission from Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) or Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

In exercise of the powers conferred by the Section 4 of the Guwahati Building Construction (Regulation) Act, 2010 (Assam Act No. XVI of 2010) hereinafter referred to as the Act, the Governor of Assam is hereby pleased to make the following building byelaws to regulate the construction of building under the jurisdication of Guwahati Metropolitan Area, namely -
1. Short Title extent and commencement -
These Byelaws may be called the Guwahati Building Construction (Regulation) Byelaws, 2014.
It shall extend to the whole of the Guwahati Metropolitan Area as notified in the Master Plan for the city of Guwahati.
They shall come into force on the date of their publication in Official Gazette.
In these Byelaws unless there is anything repugnant in the subject or other structure which advertises a business or commercial establishment;
“Advertising Sign” means any sign, either free, standing or attached to a building or other structure which advertises a business or commercial establishment;
“Apartment” means part of a property intended for any type of independent use, including one or more rooms or enclosed spaces located on one more floor or part or parts thereof in a building intended to be used for residential, commercial or business or such other type of independent use as may be prescribed and with a direct exit to a public street, road or highway or to a common area leading to such street, road, or highway;
